Coronavirus has killed 28, and infected 1,200 Nepalis worldwide

KATHMANDU: As of Saturday, 28 Nepalis living in 21 countries have lost their lives due to the coronavirus.

The pandemic killed 17 Nepalis in the United Kingdom, 8  in the United States, two in the United Arab Emirates and one in Ireland, the Non-resident Nepali Association (NRNA), the umbrella organization of the non-resident Nepalis, stated in its recent press release.

According to the NRNA, 1,166 Nepalis have tested positive for the deadly virus across the globe. Of them, 700 are in the US, 200 in the UK, 10 in Spain, 71 in the UAE, four in Germany, 22 in Portugal, Ireland 22,  11 in Australia, four in Saudi Arabia, 21 in Kuwait, and one each in France, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar and Hong Kong. Likewise, five Nepalis in Switzerland, four in Belgium, three in Canada, two in Malta and 31 in Nepal have been infected by the virus.

The NRNA also said that two Nepalis have recovered so far from the virus. 

The NRNA compiled the figure of Nepalis hit hard by the virus based on the information provided by Nepali doctors in foreign countries, Nepali diplomatic missions abroad, NRNA branches and local organizations, stated the press release.

The NRNA has distributed relief materials to 10,000 Nepalis affected by the virus in over two dozen countries. It has also mobilized its chapters to provide relief to NRNs.

A meeting of NRNA COVID-19 High-Level Committee, under the leadership of its chairperson Kumar Pant, is being held today to discuss further strategies in dealing with the pandemic.
