Sugar mills in Sarlahi have started purchasing sugarcane from farmers without fixing the price of the crop.
Farmers were earlier demanding Rs562 for every quintal of sugarcane. However, sugar mills declined to accept farmers’ proposal stating sugar prices had dropped worldwide. As differences between farmers and sugar producers widened, the price could not be fixed.
But now farmers have agreed to supply the crop as mill owners have agreed to provide at least Rs531 for per quintal of sugarcane.
Sugar producers had resorted to this measure as discussions consumed much of the time, delaying the production cycle. Sugarcane is planted on around 22 hectares of land in Sarlahi.
The district produces around Rs8 million worth of the crop.
