Nepal’s COVID-19 recovery rate is the lowest among SAARC countries

COVID-19 recovery tally goes past 50,000

KATHMANDU: Less than 73 percent of the total people diagnosed with the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) across Nepal have recovered so far, according to the Ministry of Health and  Population (MoHP). This is the lowest recovery rate among the eight member states of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC)

With 47 COVID-19 patients discharged from various isolation centers in different parts of the country in the past 24 hours, the total number of people recovering from the deadly viral infection stood at 50,411 on Thursday. A total of 69,301 people have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in Nepal as of Thursday.  

According to the data compiled by the ministry, the highest number of people --13,072 -- recovering from this viral disease are from Bagmati Province followed by Province 2 where 12,805 patients have successfully recovered from the disease as of Thursday. 

Similarly, 7,825 patients in Province 5 and 6,370 of Sudur Paschim Province and 4,600 others in Province 1 have also gained recovery. The recovery tally in Gandaki Province stands at 2,948 while the number of those recovered in Karnali Province is 2,791 as of Thursday afternoon. 

Pakistan has recorded the highest recovery rate of 95.5 percent followed by Sri Lanka where 94.1 percent of COVID-19 infected patients have gained recovery. Nepal’s southern neighbor, India has also witnessed a recovery rate of 81.6 percent while the rate of recuperation in the Maldives stands at 86.3 percent. Nepal lags behind Afghanistan (83.3), Bhutan (75.1) and Bangladesh (73.1) as well in terms of the recovery rate among the infected patients. 

On a positive note, Nepal, however, is one among three SAARC countries that have witnessed less than 1 percent mortality rate among the COVID-19 patients. Only 0.7 percent of the total COVID-19 patients in Nepal have succumbed to this disease as of Thursday. Afghanistan has recorded the highest COVID-19 death rate of 3.7 percent followed by Pakistan (2.4).
