The latest Human Development Index is coming out on 14 September 2018!

August 30, 2018

The Human Development Report Office (HDRO) will release the Human Development Indices and Indicators: 2018 Statistical Update, which includes UNDP’s signature index, the Human Development Index (HDI) as well as other relevant human development indices and indicators on 14 September 2018 at 10am EST.

The 2018 Statistical Update, available online, provides an overview of the state of human development – snapshots of current conditions as well as long-term trends in human development achievements – and works as a bridge towards the next generation of Human Development Reports. The 2018 Statistical Update includes over 120 global indicators, composite indices and dashboards. The human development composite indices comprise:

  • The Human Development Index, calculated this year for 189 countries, ranks countries according to their progress in key dimensions of human development – health, education and income;
  • Trends in the Human Development Index, which highlights changes in the HDI over a period ranging from 1990 to 2017, showing which countries have improved more and which ones have suffered setbacks in human development while allowing for the analysis of long-term trends;
  • The Inequality-Adjusted Human Development Index, calculated for 151 countries, captures which countries are most and least unequal in terms of the distribution of health, education and income gains among their populations;
  • The Gender Development Index, which showcases gaps in human development achievements between men and women for 160 countries, and the Gender Inequality Index, which captures gender-based inequalities for 159 countries in health, empowerment, and economic status;
  • The Multidimensional Poverty Index, which looks at poverty going beyond income, will be included in the 2018 Statistical Update upon its launch on 20 September 2018. More information about it can be found here.

In addition to the composite indices, the update also presents standard tables on various human development indicators. Five statistical dashboards draw attention to the relationship between human well-being and the 1) quality of human development; 2) life-course gender gaps; 3) women’s empowerment; 4) environmental sustainability; and 5) socioeconomic sustainability. These new dashboards align the family of human development indicators with the Sustainable Development Goal indicators.
