Water, milk, noodles and oil most substandard edibles

Department of Food Technology and Quality Control has filed cases against more than a dozen industries in Province 1 found to be producing sub-standard edibles.

The DFTQC filed cases under Food Act, 2052 at respective District Administration Offices against industries including Asian Thai Foods manufacturer of RumPum Noodles, Baba Vegetable Oil producer of Soyabean Oil, Bagmati Oil producer of Sunflower Oil and Bimal Food Product.

Action has been recommended against more than a dozen industries in Jhapa, Morang and Sunsari that were found to be manufacturing substandard edibles, DFTQC’s Regional Office informed.

Most of the drinking water, cooking oil, processed milk and milk products, vegetable ghee and spices sold in the region were found to be below standards during a quality check, DFTQC Regional Chief Pramod Koirala said.

Government statistics show that among the 625 samples of edible products collected for a quality check in the last fiscal, 87 edibles consumed in the province were found to be violating the Food Act.

Moreover, the rate of adulteration and the production of substandard products has increased steadily over the last five years.

In the fiscal year 2013/14, 36 food items were found to be below legal standards in the province.
