KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Valley has witnessed as many as 232 new cases of novel coronavirus disease in the past 24 hours, according to the daily media briefing by the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP).

This is the highest daily spike in the Valley, which is also the federal capital of the country, since the country reported the first case of this viral infection on January 24 earlier this year.

Of the newly-confirmed cases, Kathmandu district alone witnessed 199 new cases while 19 and 14 other people were diagnosed with this disease in Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts, respectively, said health ministry spokesperson Dr Jageshwar Gautam, during the virtual press briefing earlier on Tuesday afternoon.

As per the data compiled by the ministry, the COVID-19 tally in the Valley has climbed to 3,486 - 2756 in Kathmandu, 444 in Lalitpur and 286 in Bhaktapur districts.

The number of confirmed cases in the Valley since August 1 stands at 3,143. The infection has spread in the capital as a huge number of people arrived here from their home districts to resume their pre-lockdown activities following the government decision to lift the nationwide lockdown after four months on June 21.

Amid the soaring cases of this viral infection, the district administrations in all three districts of the Valley have enforced prohibitory orders until August 26, applying restrictions on all services and business activities other than those listed as essential ones.

Meanwhile, a meeting the Municipal Mayor Forum held in Kathmandu on Monday decided to suggest to the DAOs of these three districts to extend the prohibitory orders until August 31, keeping in mind the rising coronavirus cases in the Valley.
