KATHMANDU: The retail price of Chinese onions has reached Rs 200 in the markets of Kathmandu, nearly equal to that of Indian onions. Due to absence of Indian onions in the Nepali market, Chinese onions have become an alternative for Nepali consumers.
According to Binaya Shrestha, deputy director of Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Board, Indian onions from completely stopped coming into Nepal. "For that reason, the demand for Chinese onions is increasing," he said, adding: "An increase in demand has also increased its price."
The Indian government had banned onion export in late September. Since then, Nepal is facing onion shortage and price rise.
