Seven chief ministers set to take oath

Feb 12, 2018-Chief Ministers elected to seven provinces are set to take oath and run provincial governments for the first time in Nepal’s history, following the selection of Prithvi Subba Gurung as parliamentary party leader of Province 4 on Sunday. 

These new chief ministers—four from the CPN-UML, two from the CPN (Maoist Centre) and one from the Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum-Nepal—will run the provincial governments for the next five years. 

Gurung was elected unopposed as the Parliamentary Party leader on Sunday after contender Kiran Gurung withdrew his candidacy. “I will go to State Chief [Governor] to claim for government formation after two days,” said PS Gurung after his election as PP leader. 

Dormani Poudel has already been appointed the chief minister of Province 3 and will take oath of office and secrecy on Monday. State chief Anuradha Koriala will administer the oath to Poudel.

Rest of the chief ministers will take their oaths by this week. Formation of provincial government begins along with oath taking ceremony. 

Sher Dhan Rai (UML) has already been elected from Province 1. Mohammad Lal Babu Raut of the SSF-N, Dormani Poudel, PS Gurung, Shankar Pokhrel of the UML, and Mahendra Bahadur Shai and Trilochan Bhatta of the Maoist Centre have already been announced as their respective parliamentary party  leaders from Province 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Minor drama took place in Province 4 after two candidates staked their claims to CM post from the Oli camp. Kiran Gurung withdrew his candidacy after party Chair KP Sharma Oli intervened.

 

Know your chief ministers

Province 1

Sher Dhan Rai : Former minister, Rai is the in charge of Province no 1 of the UML. He has a Masters in Sociology. He was born in Bhojpur 46 years back. He joined politics from All Nepal National Free Students Union on 1987. He is unmarried yet.

 

Province 2

Mohammad Lal Babu Raut: A resident of Parsa, Raut hails from a Muslim community. He was elected member of the second CA through the PR system. He was elected to the provincial assembly from Parsa-2(A) in the latest provincial assembly polls. 

 

Province 3

Dormani Poudel: The former Mayor of Hetauda Municipality is serving President of Nepal Municipality Association for 20 years. A former teacher, Dormani is experienced hand in Nepal’s decentralisation and local bodies. 

 

Province 4

Prithvi Subba Gurung:  A resident of Lamjung, Gurung served in various capacities in UML since 1979. He worked in UML’s central Adivasi-Janajati department and others. The former lawmaker and minister, he is equally active in social filed too. 

 

Province 5

Shankar Pokhrel:  Elected as provincial assembly member from Dang-2 (A), Pokhrel had joined politics from the students’ front. He was elected Member of Parliament from Dang-2 in 1994. Pokhrel is standing committee member of the party. 

 

Province 6

Mahendra Bahadur Shahi: He became Energy Minister during the lastest government led by Sher Bahadur Deuba. He was a commander of Maoist led peoples war. He was directly elected from Kalikot during second CA.

 

Province 7

Trilochan Bhatta: Elected as member of provincial assembly from Doti. Bhatta is a politburo member of the Maoist Centre and also the chairman of Doti district. 

He entered politics from 1991 joining Akhil Bharat Ekata Samaj.
