KATHMANDU: Chief of the Metropolitan Kathmandu Crime Range Uttam Raj Subedi said on Sunday that violence against women is growing at an alarming rate with an adverse effect on their mental and physical health.
In an interaction program on community police-people partnership in the capital, SSP Subedi stated said that violence against women is rising at an alarming rate.
Subedi said that crime rate has sharply increased in the society due to the extreme use of illegal drugs and misuse of social media.
The cases of murder, rape, and violence have doubled in the past two years, according to him.
Out of 500 murder cases, 153 were related to the murder of wives by their husbands. Only 30 cases are related to the killing of husbands by their wives.
Subedi said that the misuse of social media networks has also contributed to increase the crime rate. “Forty percent of suicide cases were related to the misuse of the social network,” he said.
Last year, 64 percent of raped victims were below 18 and they were found raped by their own family members, neighbors, colleagues, and teachers. In previous years, most of the rape victims were below 16.
SSP Subedi urged one and all help spreading public awareness at the community level.
